Electricity is an indispensable component of modern life, powering our homes, industries, and economies. However, the generation of this essential resource often comes at a significant environmental cost. As the world grapples with the escalating climate crisis, the need for sustainable energy solutions has become increasingly urgent.
The Impact of Resource Utilization on Climate Change
The utilization of natural resources, particularly fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas, has a profound impact on climate change. These fuels release Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (NOx), which trap heat in the atmosphere, leading to global warming and its associated consequences.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has identified the energy sector as the primary source of GHG emissions, accounting for 34% of global emissions. Other significant contributors include industry (24%), agriculture, forestry, and land-use change (22%), transportation (15%), and buildings (6%). Renewable vs. Non-renewable Resources
Natural resources can be categorized into two distinct groups: renewable and non-renewable.
Renewable resources, such as solar energy, water, wind, geothermal energy, and biomass, possess the ability to replenish themselves over time. They can be continuously utilized without depleting their natural reserves.
Non-renewable resources, on the other hand, have a finite supply and will eventually be exhausted through continuous use. Examples include oil, natural gas, coal, metals, and minerals. While these resources may reform over millions of years, the process is far too slow to match the rate of human consumption.
The Urgency of Energy Transition
The escalating climate crisis necessitates a collective shift towards sustainable energy sources, a process known as energy transition. This transition involves replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy sources, reducing energy consumption, and improving energy efficiency.
Rekam Nusantara Foundation's Documentary Series: Unveiling the Energy Transition
Rekam Nusantara Foundation has embarked on a mission to capture and share inspiring stories of energy transition initiatives across Indonesia. Our documentary series, "Menyoal Transisi Energi," explores the practical realities and potential of transitioning to a more sustainable energy landscape.
Launch Event and Public Engagement
On February 28, 2024, we proudly launched our six-episode documentary series at Teater Asrul Sani, Taman Ismail Marzuki, Jakarta. The event drew an audience of 90 diverse individuals, including policymakers, activists, and community members.
The launch featured a captivating screening of the first two episodes, followed by an engaging panel discussion moderated by Akita Verselita of Mongabay Indonesia. The panel included:
Een Irawan Putra, Director of Urban and Sustainability, Rekam Nusantara Foundation
Beyrra Triasdian, Trend Asia
Toto Sutanto, Secretary of Koperasi Rimba Raya, PLTMH Mikrohidro Gunung Halu
Harry Pujiansyah Bahri, PT. Asindo Tech
Key Takeaways from the Event
The documentary series showcases the tangible examples of energy transition initiatives being implemented across Indonesia.
The transition presents an opportunity for Indonesia to address its global commitments and unlock immense economic potential.
The transition requires a collaborative effort from all stakeholders, including government, communities, and industries.
The Role of Communities and Industries in Energy Transition
The documentary highlights the crucial role of communities in embracing sustainable energy solutions. Toto Sutanto, from Desa Tangsijaya, Gunung Halu, shared his experience of establishing a micro-hydropower plant (PLTMH) that has transformed the lives of his community members.
The series also showcases the innovative efforts of industries like PT Asindo, which has harnessed biogas from its waste to power its operations. This demonstrates the potential for industries to reduce their environmental impact and contribute to the transition.
The Path Forward
The documentary series "Menyoal Transisi Energi" is a testament to the transformative power of energy transition. It serves as a catalyst for further engagement and action towards a more sustainable future.
Limited Screening and Upcoming Youtube Release
The documentary series will be screened at select events before being made available on Rekam Nusantara Foundation's Youtube channel.
We invite you to join us on this journey as we explore the possibilities of a greener, more resilient energy future for Indonesia.
