Jakarta (18/11)— “My Chocolate Is Killing People” was broadcast during the 2024 Fi.Nan.SIAL Festival series of events. This event is a forum for reflection for the public to reveal the relationship between the financial industry, consumption and social and environmental impacts. The event which took place at the Salihara Theater was organized by TuK Indonesia and the Indonesia Nature Film Society (INFIS).
"My Chocolate Is Killing People" is a documentary film by collaboration between INFIS and Tuk Indonesia—exploring the dark side of the palm oil industry, including the tragedy that occurred in Seruyan, Central Kalimantan, in October 2023. Lateral conflict between the community and the palm oil company PT. HMBP resulted in shootings that claimed lives. This incident reflects violations of land rights, a lack of transparency, and the negative impact of business practices that ignore sustainability and human rights.
This film not only touches on environmental issues but also raises the importance of social justice in everyday product consumption. Behind the delicious chocolate that we consume, it turns out that there is a heartbreaking story that is far from the attention of consumers.
Apart from film screenings, the Fi.Nan.SIAL Festival also presents a series of other events such as visual art installations, interactive simulations, art performances, and the unique activity of writing letters of complaint to banks that fund destructive projects. All of this aims to increase awareness of the impact of every consumption choice.
"This festival is a space to hear stories that are often overlooked and makes us aware of the importance of sustainability and social justice," said Linda Rosalina, Executive Director of TuK Indonesia.
Let's join in voicing neglected rights, a first step towards wiser consumption and a fairer world.
