(Bogor) Tuesday, June 4, 2024 Lawalata IPB University or the student community of nature lovers visited Indonesia Nature Film Society (INFIS) with the aim to learn how to make documentary films. The young members of Lawalata IPB will go on an expedition to Maratua Island, to study the endemic jellyfish on the island. Their trip will also include learning about documentary filmmaking, which will record every important moment and natural beauty they encounter during the expedition trip.
A total of 17 members of Lawalata IPB attended this visit, with high enthusiasm to understand the creative process of documentary filmmaking firsthand, from conceptualizing, implementing production to editing. In this visit, Lawalata IPB was guided and given materials related to how to make a documentary film by Faizal Abdul Aziz as INFIS Manager.
One of the main focuses of their visit was to learn the art of documentary filmmaking. The material they explored included a thorough introduction to documentary filmmaking, from its various types to basic techniques in the production process. The young members learned about the types of documentary films, ranging from descriptive narrative to experimental, as well as how to choose the right type according to the story they want to tell.
Not only theory, they were also involved in intensive field practice. The shooting process becomes an important part of their training. They learn about proper composition, good shooting techniques, and how to capture the most evocative moments. In addition, they were also involved in direct photo and video shooting practices around the INFIS office area as a simulation of how to capture good footage and in accordance with the rules of the desired types of documentaries.
Last but not least was the script development. The members of Lawalata IPB learned how to craft a good script for their documentary. They understood the importance of having a strong narrative, data support and a clear storyline to keep the audience's interest. They practiced writing a script that evokes passion and is able to convey the message they want to convey through their documentary.
Lawalata IPB's visit to INFIS is a little journey that will take them deeper into the world of documentary filmmaking. With the knowledge base and skills they gained during this visit, the young members of Lawalata IPB are expected to be ready to immortalize the expedition trip to Maratua Island in a documentary film that can inspire a wide audience regarding awareness of natural resource conditions, findings and scientific studies that they are involved in. They have brought back more than just memories, they have brought back skills and experiences that will shape their future careers.
